A retired traffic officer runs a volunteer neighbourhood watch over six houses and requires one household to walk the same 240-metre lap every night at ten, logging every irregularity in a numbered book that is not allowed to contain a gap and already contains an entry describing tomorrow.
Hal Brennan, sixty-eight, retired from traffic enforcement after thirty-one years of writing reports other people filed. He now runs the Kestrel Row Neighbourhood Watch, which he founded out of habit and which has six member households, a laminated route card and a stopwatch he bought himself. The rule is simple: every night at ten, one household walks the lap, and everything observed goes into the Watch Log, numbered in sequence, investigated by the warden in daylight, and closed before the next patrol, because a log with a gap in it is not a log. Tobin Reed, thirty-one, a secondary school teacher, moved into number two in the spring and joined the roster because it was easier than declining. On his first lap the street is completely quiet — and the log already contains entry four thousand one hundred and twenty, in Hal’s handwriting, describing a missing bin, dated tomorrow. Margo Brennan has known what that entry means for twenty-two years and has never filed it. Essie Vance has been numbering vehicles on this street since before the watch existed. What nobody expects is that the arithmetic of the log is about to become the only thing holding the street together, and that Hal is the one entry it has never been able to close.
