A building superintendent signs a maintenance contract that guarantees to fix any reported fault within twenty-four hours by moving it to the nearest identical fixture, so she spends her life shuffling the same broken building around forty flats.
Dolores Vance, forty-four, has been the superintendent at Vantage Court for nine years and can name every pipe in the building by its sound. When the owner replaces three tradesmen with a subscription service called Fixwell, she signs because the alternative is doing the whole block alone. Fixwell’s guarantee is one-for-one: report a fault, and within twenty-four hours it is closed by moving it to the nearest identical fixture of equal rating. Her first ticket is a dripping tap in 3B. By morning 4B has a dripping tap and 3B is dry. Dee spends the first act learning the rules of a board she is not allowed to leave, and the second act playing it, parking faults in empty flats, stairwells and her own kitchen, keeping forty tenants from noticing that the building is not being repaired so much as shuffled. What nobody expects is that Fixwell is not a bad contractor. It is an excellent one, and it has been counting since 1974.
